Dr. Smith will design your personal Anti-aging Medicine program

Based on a thorough medical history and physical exam, extensive laboratory panel including hormone levels and bio-markers of aging a specific Age Management Medicine program will be developed for you incorporating the latest advances in the field.

The areas of focus will include:

How the Program Works:

  • Prescriptions for hormone replacement therapy, including items such as testosterone, sermorelin, growth hormone, estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, hCG, and other medications will be shipped to you from my compounding pharmacy, in either brand name or generic form, depending on your preference. Some items may be obtained through your pharmacy.

  • Nutritional supplements are ordered for you through selected providers who offer pharmaceutical grade products, with label claim, potency, and purity verified by third party independent laboratory testing. Alternative sources are provided should you prefer to do your own shopping for these products.

  • Lab testing is done four times a year using a lab of your choice. I can provide a Mobile Phlebotomy Service or send you to a LabCorp facilities if you want to use insurance.

  • Appointments are scheduled via phone or Zoom for initial evaluation and follow up as needed.

  • Primary care doctors and specialists you currently see should be retained. Antiaging Atlanta do not attempt to duplicate these services as they are in those specialties for a reason - they are highly qualified in their fields, just as I fill an important and unique niche for the purposes of hormone optimization and nutritional supplementation.

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormones are naturally occurring substances produced by specialized cells in our bodies. They affect the metabolism of other cells that have receptors for the particular hormone.

Bio-identical hormones are simply hormones identical to those normally produced in the body as opposed to those found in drugs such as Premarin.

Bio-identical hormones include estradiol, progesterone, human growth hormone, testosterone, DHEA, melatonin and others.

It is now understood that many of our hormone levels decline with age and that our hormone levels have broad reaching consequences for our metabolism and the state of our health.

There is a fundamental question being debated in medicine today, and that is:

Do our hormone levels decline because we age or do we age because our hormone levels decline?

Many anti-aging physicians believe that we develop many of the degenerative diseases of aging at least in part due to declining hormone levels.

One component of your personalized anti-aging program will be to restore your hormone levels to those normally found in the 20 - 30 year age range. This approach avoids the complications that may be seen when unmonitored hormone doses are used.

This therapy is not to be confused with anabolic steroids used by certain athletes or synthetic hormones such as Premarin. We are simply replacing hormones that are normally produced in your body to youthful levels.

Complete bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is much more effective than replacing single hormones in achieving optimal health since hormones act synergistically. We therefore replace when appropriate human growth hormone, testosterone, DHEA and melatonin in men and human growth hormone, testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, DHEA and melatonin in women.

Most individuals realize health benefits associated with a more youthful metabolism including increased energy and vitality, improved mood and outlook on life, improved body composition, and a stronger immune system among others.

Dr. Smith is committed to help you achieve a state of optimal health and vitality.

Nutraceuticals

The term nutraceutical is another term for dietary supplement.

It is important to take the proper amounts of high quality bioavailable nutraceuticals to achieve maximum benefit. It is also important to know which products to avoid based on you medical history or medication you may be taking.

The main categories* of Nutraceuticals for antiaging purposes are:

  • Vitamins (water soluble and fat soluble)

  • Minerals (major, minor, and trace)

  • Essential fatty acids (such as eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid)

  • Antioxidants (such as betacarotene)

    • Fat Soluble (Betacarotene, Vitamin E, CoQ10)

    • Water Soluble (Vitamin C)

    • Surface Active (polyphenols)

  • Mitochodrial nutrients (such as alpha-lipoic acid and acetyl-l carnitine)

  • Herbal extracts (such as indole-3-carbinol and lycopene)

*There is of course overlap between these categories.

You will receive extensive instruction on the use of Nutraceuticals as part of you anti-aging program.

An example of a Basic Supplementation using Pure Encapsulation Products available at the link below:

includes:

  • Ultranutrient

  • EPA DHA Essentials

  • Osteobalance

  • Indole 3 Carbinol (women)

  • Saw Palmetto Plus (men)

Low Glycemic Diet

Glycemic Index and the Low Glycemic Diet and Ketogenic Diet

The glycemic index is a ranking of carbohydrates based on their immediate effect on blood glucose (blood sugar) levels. It compares foods gram for gram of carbohydrate.

High Glycemic Index: Carbohydrates that breakdown quickly during digestion have the highest glycemic indexes. The blood glucose response is fast and high. This category includes foods such as low fiber bread, pasta, white rice, potatoes, crackers, french fries, etc.

Low Glycemic Index: Carbohydrates that breakdown slowly, releasing glucose gradually into the blood stream, have low glycemic indexes. This category includes foods such as broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, hemp or sprouted grain bread, and high fiber fruits including apples and pears.

A low glycemic index diet is simply one which favors the use of foods with a relatively low glycemic index.

This type of diet is essential for a successful antiaging program for many reasons:

Antiaging Benefits of a Low Glycemic Diet

  • A low glycemic index diet lowers fasting insulin levels which promotes the ability to burn stored fat and improve body composition. Without lowering fasting insulin, weight loss is almost impossible no matter how much exercise you do or how much you restrict your caloric intake.

  • Elevated fasting insulin levels are also associated with many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease. A low glycemic diet lowers fasting insulin levels.

  • Elevated fasting insulin is also correlated with elevated CRP which is a measure of your total body inflammation. This correlates with diseases such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, arthritis, and cancer.

  • Low fasting insulin also results in greater effectiveness of human growth hormone replacement therapy and higher natural IGF1 levels by allowing higher levels of IGF-1 to be produced by the liver, since high insulin levels may reduce IGF1 production through a negative feedback loop.

  • Lowering insulin and glucose levels reduces the damage to cellular proteins caused by glycosylation or the binding of excess sugar to cellular proteins as measured by HgA1c. Glycation of proteins, or the sticking of sugar to protein molecules, is thought to be one of the mechanisms of aging.

You will receive instruction on an enjoyable low glycemic index diet as part of your antiaging program.

Exercise

It is now time to talk about the "E" word - exercise. Some people like the "A" word better - activity. In any event the great thing about an anti-aging program is that the results you achieve from increased activity or exercise are multiplied many fold by the underlying changes in your metabolism. Believe it or not exercise becomes much more productive and even enjoyable.

The ideal exercise program for Anti-Aging Medicine or Age Management Medicine purposes includes a combination of:

  • Strength training (anaerobic exercise)

  • Cardiovascular conditioning (aerobic exercise)

  • Stretching to maintain flexibility

A typical work out might include 20 min of strength training, 30 minutes of brisk walking, and ten minutes of stretching. The amount of time and intensity spent in each area may vary according to your current state of conditioning.

A personal trainer is a good initial investment to make sure you get off to the right start. Proper exercise form can maximize results and reduce risk of injury. This is also the ideal way to determine how much exercise and which types are best for you.

We will design a personal activity program for you as part of your anti-aging program.

Stress Reduction

Stress Reduction is an important component to any effective Anti-Aging Medicine and Hormone Replacement program.

Chronic stress can lead to illness and debility through the elevation of cortisol, the stress hormone. Stress reactions while helpful in the short term such as the 'fight or flight' reaction that can keep us safe in an emergency situation can be destructive if they go unchecked under chronic stress conditions.

Prolonged stress can cause reduced immunity, loss of lean body mass, increase in abdominal fat mass, thinning of the skin and other signs of tissue breakdown. This catabolic effect is opposed to the anabolic effect we are trying to achieve with our antiaging program.

You will recieve instruction on stress reduction as part of your antiaging program.

Weight Loss

Weight control is critical for achieving optimal health and longevity. During your initial assessment we will discretely determine your ideal body weight and BMI (body mass index) and set a realistic time frame to reach your goal weight and desired body composition.

The combination of Anti-aging Medicine Program elements work synergistically to change your body composition such that your lean body mass increases and your body fat mass decreases.

The use of hgh or human growth hormone in conjunction with other bioidentical anabolic hormones is particularly effective in producing a lean body composition. Other pharmaceutical and neutraceutical agents may also be employed to accelerate weight reduction if desired.

In particular you will lose abdominal or visceral fat which is the most significant in terms of health risk. Overweight and obesity are clearly associated with increased morbidity and mortality and are now considered major health risks.

We will design an appropriate weight reduction strategy as part of you antiaging program if needed.

Disease Prevention

One of the primary goals of antiaging medicine is the prevention or the delaying of the onset of the chronic degenerative diseases. The main disease targets of antiaging medicine are:

  • adult onset diabetes

  • dementia or Alzheimer's disease

  • cardiovascular disease (including heart attacks and strokes)

  • cancer

  • osteoporosis (bone mineral loss)

The antiaging program elements work synergistically toward this goal by addressing some of the underlying disease mechanisms including the reduction of silent inflammation, neutralizing free radicals, and enhancing cellular energy production.

Achieving ideal body weight and composition which is a byproduct of a successful antiaging program also reduces the risk of certain degenerative diseases since overweight and obesity have now been proven to be independent risk factors for certain illnesses.
